Darcy Jones is a social outcast as far as everyone in her Lakebrook Illinois high school is concerned. But Darcy comes from a mysterious background. She was abandoned at age five outside of a Chicago firehouse with no recollection of any memories before that event and has been passed down time and time again to new foster parents. One day at Darcy's school a mysterious new stranger named Conn shows up, claiming to be a student and like many others, Darcy is intrigued with him. When assigned an English project with him, she learns so much more of him than she ever expected. She is taken to a whole new world in another dimension that branched off of a great historic event in Chicago's history: the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Here, she learns of a new species of beings called Shades who have the incredible ability to become invisible to the human eye but leave one trace of their presence: a shadow. But, these beings are labeled by society as heartless terrorists that use their abilities to concoct chaos and destruction and, for the most part, the shade population is exactly that. Upon learning she is a shade, Darcy is presented with a deal from The Interdimensional Bureau of Investigation to spy on her own kind and in return be allowed to return home. Through her experiences from inside the Shadow Society she is able to gain information to feed to the IBI and slowly learns the truth of her past and dares to risk everything she loves to save the human race from another Chicago tragedy. Darcy: she is the main character of the story, and the story is told from her point of view. She's somewhat lost at the beginning, but slowly, throughout the story, as she learns more about herself and her past, Darcy begins to find herself. She is terrified of Conn at first, but she is able to "forgive and forget".
ReplyDeleteConn: he mysteriously appeared at Darcy's school one day. He got close to Darcy and arrested her; he was the one that took her to the IBI headquarters. He is a mysterious love interest for Darcy. He has his opinions about her at the beginning, but he slowly realizes the true person behind this particular Shade.
Marsha: Darcy's current foster mother that truly cares about her.
Kellford: Darcy used to call him "Bear"; he is the one that reveals the truth about Darcy's past. He is the one that asked for the fake death certificate, and he, ultimately, saved Darcy's life.
Lily: Darcy's female best friend who plays in important role in Darcy's life.
Jims: Darcy's comic relief and one of her best friends; he is always eating Slim Jims. He loves science fiction and video games; he was "primed", so he was the one that was able to see the portal.
Raphael: one of Darcy's male best friends. He's been in love with Darcy for a long time, but she's not interested.
Taylor: a girl at Darcy's school that seemed like the snob, she ends up helping Darcy's friends and even travels through the portal with them.
Orion: a Shade that Darcy met at the Society's headquarters. He seemed like a good friend at first to Darcy, but then he turned hostile.
Savannah: a Shade that voted against Darcy at the beginning, so it seemed like she wouldn't be an ally, but in the end, Darcy found an (unlikely) friend in her.
